Not always the case if a program is bigger it will be slower, think part of it has to do with your system,system configurations, amount of running processes, drive space and compatibility.
The PDF standard evolves and obviously, if you are not part of the creation of that standard, it will be more difficult at least to stay fully compatible with its newest features.
